A 40-second look at SpaceX’s first successful landing of a rocket doesn’t need much beyond the core footage. Simple text overlay explains what’s happening, and the imagery is amazing enough that music isn’t needed:

Here’s a great example of how stock video footage can be transformed by text. And while this clip features an appropriately upbeat backing track, the video works fully on mute too:
Kerby Rosanes draws our favorite musicians
This quick clip of an artist sketching out cartoon-y versions of musicians shows that an interesting concept and the footage to match is all you need for a good video. They keep the text-overlay simple, letting the viewer know what’s happening but not going into extraneous detail.
Myanmar earthquake
A short, 90-second news clip uses voiceover to share a lot of fine details of the story. A couple major points are displayed via text, but instead of doing so using overlay, the video uses a still of the publisher’s Twitter page. It’s a smart way to try to drive viewers to social:
3 Big Stories
In just one minute, this video tackles three big stories from the past week with lightning speed. The combination of text-overlay and focused footage makes it a piece that can work completely independent of sound:
